Ben's Story

Berkeley Councilmember

District 3

-

I'm the current Councilmember for Berkeley’s District 3, a 5th generation Berkeley native, an attorney, and lifelong advocate for equity and inclusion. As the son of political activists, I learned the value of community and the necessity of progress. Those values of innovation, opportunity, and inclusion continue to inform my work.

I was raised to believe that this community–no matter the heartbreak and strife–is a place of promise and opportunity. Our problems are not unique to our County; if we help people here, we help people everywhere. It just takes vision, courage, and a community of purpose.

I grew up surrounded by community organizers and leaders, like my uncle, Congressman Ron Dellums, and my father, Dayle Bartlett. From an early age, I learned the value of community and the necessity of progress.

I was inspired to study environmental law while working for the Obama campaign. I worked on major initiatives, including helping launch Cap and Trade in California and designing electric vehicle finance programs.

"Ben is a nationally recognized policy leader known for his collaborative and effective leadership style, focusing on innovation and inclusion. This is why he has been able to pass over 100 pieces of legislation in Berkeley, improving the lives of its residents. WBen'sd Ben’s visionary leadership to unlock the promise of Alameda County for all" of us."

- Elihu Harris, Former Mayor and Assemblymember

I found the love of my life, Yelda, in Berkeley. Yelda is also an attorney and advocate. We are now raising a daughter in Berkeley whose favorite color is “sparkly "rainbow.”
